Thank you for this article it is very important and I hope most planners can read it, we waste alot of paper on documents at events and they are never cheap. A simple binding of presentations cost so much even if they are done in black and white, just imagine the extra costs when done in colour which is normally so, and sometimes the organizers may decide to publish a full booklet, by the time you cost the graphics designer, and printer costs, you have wasted so much money which could have gone to furthering the cause of the event. Thanks again for this worthy article!

No. 6 Surrounding yourself with great talent should be the policy for any planner, I have seen people fire and hire all year round simply because they cannot take their time to search right and hire the right people. It takes time but it is worth it anytime!

As an organizer I'm interested in RFID to be able to track traffic at the show and use for floor layout in following years, as well as marketing future events. Given that use I would need to purchase several readers placed throughout the show floor. That along with the tags is where our feelings of this technology being expensive. Prices I've seen for readers were higher than $350 per reader.

I also have questions about their use for exhibitors as "lead retrieval" devices. Do exhibitors have the option of collecting specific data when talking to a booth visitor like they do with many lead retrieval systems? Adding qualifying questions or being able to enter text on each lead? Can this data easily be downloaded into their own CRM systems?

I'd be interested in learning more about these types of uses.

The iPad just makes sense in so many tradeshow applications. Our distributors have encouraged us to develop holders since they are getting requests. We've just started, but I thought I'd pass along three examples, including a flush-mount option for almost any freestanding pedestal with a laminate top.

Great piece Roger, it is amazing how the iPad seems to be findings its way into all aspects of our lives and now our businesses!

The company I work for, Marketpoint, uses iPads for a whole range of these activities at tradeshows including lead retrieval. We've found them to be a fantastic tool that avoids the reams of paper and business cards that traditionally accompany tradeshow data capture. The live reporting aspect is also particularly sought after, potentially shaving a lot of valuable time off the sales cycle. It can allow you to monitor progress as the show proceeds and to integrate the data with your CRM so you can chase up 'hot' leads before your competitors get a look in.

You made tons of great points about the ever-so-popular iPads. Everyone is intrigued in the sleek, portable device and is the perfect addition to trade show booths. As you mentioned, using them as lead retrieval systems have become the norm. It makes sense since you have the ability to relay all of your leads' information to your marketing or sales team while you are still at the event. Looking forward to seeing other uses for these high-tech devices.

Thank you Roger for the insightful post! As founder of a start-up (http://wellknown.as/)in this space, I believe offering a mobile solution for event is a must-have for most events.
Our approach is to offer a free mobile solution for any event to use and neither charge organizers nor attendees. We also support iPhone and other devices and our solution can be integrated with Eventbrite, so that attendees automatically notice that the event uses a mobile solution.
Let us please know what you think! Your feedback is appreciated!
